Residential Care Home vs. Large Facility: 5 Key Differences

What’s the difference between a 6-bed residential care home and a large assisted living facility? Here are five differences that matter when choosing care for someone you love.

When most people think “assisted living,” they picture a large building with long hallways, a reception desk, and dozens of residents. But there’s another option that most families don’t know about: residential care homes.

A residential care home is exactly what it sounds like: a regular house in a regular neighbourhood that’s been licensed to provide assisted living care for a small number of residents. Here’s how they compare to large facilities.

1. Size: 6 Residents vs. 80 to 150 Residents

This is the most fundamental difference. A residential care home typically houses 4 to 6 residents. A large facility may house 80, 100, or even 150+ residents across multiple floors and wings.

The experience of living in a home with 5 other people is fundamentally different from living in a building with 100 strangers.

2. Caregiver Ratio: 1:3 vs. 1:8 or 1:12

In a 6-bed home with 2 caregivers on duty, each caregiver is responsible for 3 residents. In a large facility, one caregiver may be responsible for 8, 10, or even 12 residents.

This difference shows up in response times, personal attention, and the ability to provide truly individualised care. When your loved one needs help at 2am, the caregiver in a residential home is steps away. In a large facility, they might be on the other side of the building.

3. Environment: A Home vs. An Institution

Residential care homes look and feel like homes because they are. Your loved one sits in a living room, eats at a family table, and sleeps in a bedroom that can be personalised with their own belongings.

There’s no lobby, no elevator, no cafeteria with 60 seats. For seniors with dementia, this familiar home-like environment can significantly reduce confusion, anxiety, and agitation compared to the overwhelming sensory experience of a large facility.

4. Personalisation: Individual Care vs. Standard Programmes

With only 6 residents, caregivers learn each person’s preferences, routines, and personality deeply. They know that Mrs. Johnson likes her coffee with two creams at 7:15am. They know that Mr. Garcia gets agitated in the late afternoon and benefits from a quiet walk in the backyard.

Large facilities run programmes and schedules. Residential care homes run around the people who live there.

5. Cost: Often Comparable, Sometimes Lower

Many families assume residential care homes are more expensive than large facilities. In reality, the costs are often comparable and sometimes lower.

Large facilities charge for the building, amenities, and overhead of running a 100+ bed operation. Residential care homes have lower overhead and can often deliver better care at a similar or lower price point.

The right choice depends on your loved one’s needs. For seniors with dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, or those who need high-acuity care, the smaller environment and higher caregiver ratio of a residential care home can make a meaningful difference in quality of life.
